What should Manpower Auditors do about high absence figures? In some parts of a company there may be particularly high absence figures. Perhaps the sick absence record is significantly different from the rest of the Ministry. That may well indicate a deeper problem in the organisation under review. In that case, it is perfectly proper for the review team to see if they can help management identify the reasons for the high figure, and look at ways of managing the problem in order to bring the absence figures down. Solutions can range from improved monitoring and control procedures, to starting return to work interviews; rewarding good attendance as well as tackling issues like health campaigns and improving morale and motivation. Some solutions will be in the hands of the organisation under review, others may require action by senior management in the Company/ Department or Agency. In either case, the role of the Manpower Auditor in helping to diagnose and get to the root of the problem is vital.
