IntroductionAbout ten years ago, a publication by Saito et al.,1fueledexcitement and spurned wide-spread scientific activity in thequest to replace lead-containing piezoceramics represented byPb(Zr,Ti)O3(PZT) with non-toxic alternatives. This publica-tion came as a response to legislative activity by the EuropeanUnion2–4geared to eliminate toxic substances from electricaland electronic equipment to reduce their impact on the environ-ment and health. In the following years the number of annualrefereed publications increased from about 60 in 2004 to about400 in 2011.5The precursor of these more recent activities isprobably a publication by Takenaka and colleagues in 1991.6The work of Saito et al.1got attention for identifying a mix-ture of morphotropic and polymorphic phase transition region
