The research further introduced an advanced strategy for large-scale preliminary selection of putatively safe LAB intended to be used as probiotics in aquaculture.
Among the LAB species of marine origin, majority has been isolated from the Pacific Ocean region of Japan and strains belong to genus Enterococcus, Lactococcus, and Pediococcus are quite common.
In addition, many novel LAB strainswith unique characteristics
have also been isolated from marine sources, particularly, species that belongs to Caranobacterium, Marinilactobacillus, and Halolactobacillus spp.
Buntin,Chanthachum, and Hongpattarakere (2008) reported that gastrointestinal tract of marine animals is a potential source to isolate acid and bile tolerance LAB which could be used as prospective probiotic strains. Interestingly, these strains have exhibited a significant antibiotic activity against several human pathogens.
Therefore, use of marine microorganisms as probiotics for human consumption would not be a far reality.
