4. Mangrove Forest Filtration: Municipal Wastewater Treatment System
The mangrove forest filtration system is constructed based on the knowledge of the capability of mangrove to treat wastewater. The process is the combination of plant, aquatic lives, water and soil, and microorganisms mechanisms. A study was conducted to find out the species that can potentially treat wastewater in the project. Because of The special root systems that can fix and release oxygen, the following species were used in the study: Avicennia spp., Bruguiera cylindrical, Rhizophora apiculata and Ceriops tagal. The first two are the local species water quality was measured and compared between two experimental drums (see Figure 10). Retention time of both experiments was 2 weeks.
