In Queensland, Australia, Special Education Developmental Units (SEDUs) provide early childhood
special education programs, including playgroups for very young children, as well as more structured
small group programs for children aged 3 to 6 years. Children who attend SEDUs have a diagnosed
disability (or are in the process of obtaining a formal diagnosis of disability) in the areas of physical or
sensory impairments (visual, hearing), intellectual impairments (II), autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), or
language impairments (SLI). The level of impairment of children attending SEDUs can be mild to
profound. Children usually attend SEDU programs on a sessional basis. Each week a child is likely to
attend for two or more sessions which are generally of three hours duration. On the other three days of
the week, these children are likely to attend an inclusive early childhood setting.
