From a nutritional perspective, the intake of fluids is one of the most significant tasks required for people to remain healthy. Because this is a
high-frequency need for most people, skills in this area would go a long way toward promoting more independence for the person with a disability. Drinking from a cup requires a great deal of fine-motor skill in addition to strong preconception (the skill of"knowing" the location of an object not actually in view) abilities. The use of adaptive equipment such as spill-resistant top or a wide base on the bottom is still considered as independent behavior. One danger that could occur in this task is choking. If this is observed, immediately stop training efforts and consult a professional such as an occupational therapist to determine if dyspepsia or similar problems exist. Modifications to liquid consistency and head position may be recommended by these professionals in order to allow the training to continue.
