ancient literature, describes the construction of weir across the Ping River in Hari Phoon Chai Regio (presently the upper northern region of thailand).
It was located in the area near the present Sintukij Preecha Weir in Chaimai Province.
The purpose for the project was to store water for irrigation of farmland in the upper part of the Ping River Basin.
About 700 years ago a dam was constructed across a small valley 2km. southwest of the old wall of Sukhothai City.
The dam was called "Sridpongs Dam" and the name was engraved in the stone inscription by King Ramkhamhaeng the great.
