This moderator pattern is logically necessary. The more that a feature in the environment has implications for a person’s happiness or unhappiness, the more it will by definition tend to affect those outcomes. In the present section, the emphasis is on processes of judgment, focusing on whether or not a person attends to a current level of salience. In that respect, the same job feature is expected to influence subjective well-being in different ways as a function of between-person or within-person variations in its perceives importance. This theme is extended into the study of occupational values in chapter 13; dispositional forms of values involve the consistent application of J4B salience judgment across situations and times.
