nternet of things (IOT) in simple terms is every device being used in our day to day activities are smart enough to know what they need and respond in similar way.
an example for IOT which I can give you is, consider a smart home which has an alarm clock, water heater, lawn water sprinkler, coffee machine and toaster. All these devices are connected to each other via internet and are capable of talking to each other.
Now imagine you woke up in the morning by dismissing your alarm, immediately the alarm send signal to coffee maker saying you are awake and brew some coffee ready. Inn the meanwhile it also tells your water heater to warm up water.
Once you are done with your shower, then the shower will tell the toaster to toast breakfast ready. Similarly you have water sprinkler which check today's weather to see how much water needs to be sprayed on the lawn.
In short with minimal user intervention our life is being controlled and monitored by devices. These are just a few examples I can think of but there can be many ways IOT is already influencing our lives.
An another example would be the use of monitoring devices in hospitals where each of the patients devices such as pace maker is connected to internet and sends information about patient to the doctor and even contacts him in case of emergency.
There is also the dark side of this. As all these devices are connected to internet if not properly configured they can be misused to monitor us, know habits and personality of person etc.
In short I hope you understand how IOT is already influencing or might influence us.
