During the past decade, the amount of hazardous waste has increased rapidly in
local communities due to rapid economic and industrial growth. The Public Information Center
2007 reported a total amount of hazardous waste in Khon Kaen Province as about 682 ton per
year where most of the waste coming from industrials. However, only a little of the industrial
hazardous waste is treated by licensed centralized treatment facilities due to the fact that most of
the industrial hazardous waste management facilities are located in Eastern and Central parts of
Thailand. This inhibits the factories from sending their waste to be processed outside the factory.
To minimize malpractices of hazardous waste management from the factories, there is an urgent
need to established new hazardous waste landfill for treatment and disposal of hazardous waste
within Khon Kaen Province. The aim of this study is to identify suitable site for hazardous waste
landfill for accommodate hazardous waste of each generators within Khon Kaen Province. To
perform an initial screening of potential areas in Khon Kaen Province for hazardous waste landfill
sites, several factors including water resources, geology, sensitive area, communities area, and
other related factors were analyzed using the overlay technique from the Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) software. Followed by selecting potential sites with consider the size of each
potential areas having size large enough to be used for 20 years. Nevertheless, the final decision
should also take into consideration the economic aspect for reduce total fuel cost for
transportation of hazardous waste from the factories to the area. In the study was conducted by
GIS network analysis in order to finding the suitable site with minimum transport distance from
generator to each potential site.
