Candidemia infection leads to an extension in length of
hospital stay and a higher cost of treatment (Arnold et al.,
2010). So, it is quite important to give an effective treatment,
as soon as possible to improve patient outcome. Even if the
use of mycological medium requires more laboratory space
and an additional cost, we confirm in this study that a
conventional medium may not be suitable for the detection
of yeasts in the blood of patients at risk of candidemia and
invasive candidiasis. The use of specific medium appears
quite reasonable in units where patients at high risk of
invasive fungal infections are hospitalized and could
eventually lead to a significant reduction in costs related to
these infections.
In practice, if the use of mycological medium vials cannot
be economically feasible, it would be better to seed the blood
