In recent years, policymakers and industry players
have increasingly mainstreamed environmental
sustainability criteria into their planning processes,
policies and structures, not only to respond to global
challenges for reducing emissions and improving
the environmental footprint but also as a means
to improve energy savings and to achieve a more
efficient allocation of available resources. Specific
actions may involve developing fuel-efficient vessels,
improving energy efficiency, reshaping transport
architecture and networks, adapting and developing
appropriate infrastructure, rethinking and optimizing
operating procedures of freight logistics, harnessing
new technologies, and supporting information and
communications technology and intelligent transport
systems.
