Police in Nashville say a man who attacked people inside a movie theater Wednesday, sparking fears of another gunman inside a theater, had mental health issues.
This man, later identified by police as Vincente D. Montano, 29, used a hatchet and pepper spray to attack people watching a matinee screening of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” according to authorities.
Three people needed medical treatment. One man was cut on his shoulder by the hatchet, while his wife and daughter were “blasted” in the face with pepper spray, Don Aaron, a Nashville police spokesman, said Wednesday.
While the initial reports to and from police suggested a potential “active shooter” situation, a different image later emerged as it turned out that the man was armed with a pellet gun that officers said they mistook for a real firearm.
