Emphasis:
The same sentence can have different meanings if different words are emphasized
or stressed. For example, look at the dialogues below:
Dialogue 1
Cheska: People make a protest, ride bicycles and clean up on Earth Day.
Chan: What are you going to do on Earth day?
Cheska: I’m going to give a speech.
Chan is asking about Cheska’s plans compared to what other people do on
Earth Day.
Dialogue 2
Cheska: I usually visit my family on holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Chan: What are you going to do on Earth day?
Cheska: I’m going to give a speech in front of the class.
Chan is asking about Cheska’s plans for Earth Day compared to other holidays.
Sometimes, the emphasis tells you what answer the speaker expects.
