Why English is important for the AEC
The Asean Economic Community will open up a free labour market among the ten member countries of ASEAN in 2015, with professionals and skilled workers who possess an advanced level of English language proficiency having the edge on other applicants for a job position, since this language is the common medium for international communication in both the public and private sectors.
Securing high level positions and well paid jobs is a highly competitive process – for Thai people, this will mean being evaluated against applicants from Singapore and The Philippines, where the standard of English is generally higher. Consequently, strong English language skills need to be attained by Thai nationals if they are to gain the maximum advantage offered by the new 2015 AEC opportunities.
