Product differentiation can be an effective barrier to entry since, to overcome the
preference consumers have for existing products, the new entrant would either have to
offer its product at a much lower price or be forced to spend a great deal on advertising
to persuade consumers to buy its product. Both of these would have the effect of making
the costs of the new entrant higher than incumbent firms and therefore would deter
entry (see Figure 7.11).
