Lower back pain during pregnancy is widely
accepted as a consequence of pregnancy, by
women, midwives and doctors. By understanding
the main reasons why back pain occurs
during pregnancy, women can usually be reassured
and are able to help themselves. It is also
important that back pain during pregnancy is not
wrongly diagnosed and/or confused with pelvic
girdle pain (PGP), a term which includes symphisis
pubis dysfunction (SPD) and diastasis symphysis
pubis (DSP), a condition which can only be
confirmed by diagnostic imaging.
This may cause confusion for midwives as
European back care guidelines (Vleeming et al,
2007: 20) define PGP thus:
