From research on student epistemology, a prerequisite for students to be motivated to develop these skills is for students to realize that something in their beliefs is impacting their ability to make progress, i.e., there must be some epistemic doubt or acknowledgment that there is a need to change. Then the new strategies or beliefs must make sense to the students, and they must see how to apply these ideas in their situations, and finally the students need to experience that the new beliefs produce some success.
