When you read with a child… “EVERYBODY WINS!“ is a US American non-profit organisation that started in 1981 as a network of adult volunteers with employees reading to elementary school children from lower income families in a one-on-one situation once a week during their lunchtime. The network now exists in 16 US states and Washington D.C., and while the idea of voluntary mentors reading to children in order to narrow the literacy gap is continued - POWER LUNCH, three other programmes have emerged.
Readers Are Leaders pairs upper-grade student mentors with younger students for weekly one-on-one, one hour read-aloud sessions. Story Time brings storytellers and local authors into elementary schools to perform for students, bringing stories to life through music, dance and audience participation.
In EW! Book Clubs, groups of 4th and 5th grade students and their adult reading mentors select a book to read each month.
