During the reign of King Rama V , when Siam's governmental system was restructured, Lanna Chiang Mai was reorganized as Mon Thon Pa Yap or the northern prefecture which today has become a province of Thailand. Thereafter, the so-called Chiang Mai culture, customs and traditions, food, performing arts and way of dress no longer resemble only the Tai Yuan; they have been broadened to cover those of other Tai groups in the area, especially the Tai Yai, Tai Khoen and Tai Lue. Today, it is difficult to differentiate one culture from another. Rather, they have all inter-mixed to become the identity of all Chiang Mai people.
