Locomotion In the two most popular systems
(Manson and Leaver, 1988: UK; Sprecher et al.,
1997: USA), observer assigned locomotion
scores (LS) range from 1 to 5 and increase as the
severity of lameness is judged to increase. The
locomotion scoring system developed by
Sprecher et al. (1997) is most applicable to cows
housed in free-stall barns since, unlike the
system of Manson and Leaver (1988), it does not
require cows to rise from a lying position as a
part of the scoring assessment.
