After teaching for one year at the University of Minnesota and for five years at UCLA, Selznick joined UC Berkeley’s faculty in 1952 as an assistant sociology professor. He chaired the Department of Sociology from 1963–’67 amid heated debates and political tensions generated by the Free Speech Movement.
