Coleridge also uses the symbol of the Eolian Harp when describing his thoughts, his “idle flitting phantasies.” He compares them to the varying and spontaneous notes that play on the harp at the whim of the wind. This is also a broader comparison to poetry itself. Coleridge believed that Nature was the source of all that was inspiration. The comparison of finding inspiration to the whims of the wind and of nature, helps explain Coleridge’s poetic philosophy.
