As expected, young mothers had lower parity than
mothers age >19 years (Table I). Adolescent mothers were
less likely to be obese, have pregestational diabetes, or
chronic hypertension. Adolescent mothers were more likely
to be of black race (30%) compared with older mothers
(14.2%). Also, adolescent mothers were more likely to not
have initiated prenatal care prior to delivery and were far
