The solar cells are the most expensive component in a module. Concentrating systems are being developed to reduce the cell area within a module and the overall cost of the module. Today, both line focus and point focus Fresnel lens concentrators are being developed and employed to demonstrate lower installed cost per unit of output. Typical concentration ratios for PV systems are in the low (2X-20X), medium (50X-3OOX), and high (5OOX-1 OOOX) ranges. To prevent shadowing of adjacent modules/arrays, concentrating systems require greater separation necessitating an increased plant area as compared to flat plate systems.Concentrating systems utilize only the direct or beam radiation and they must be mounted on one- or two-axis trackers. They are best suited for locations with mostly clear skies throughout the year.
