When there was so much to see it was often difficult to know what to pay attention to.
Choosing to draw something that caught his attention helped to focus that attention.
Drawing the bike rack meant that Ed had to spend time looking more closely at it,
drawing mediated attention. In the process of making the drawing he became more
aware of what it was that first caught his attention and his drawing provided a means
for him to articulate the discovery he made about shadows. Ed’s motivation for drawing
the bike rack and its shadows was to discover more about the nature of shadows.
