Participants
Two cohorts of parents (or primary caretakers) in Bangkok were recruited for the study, one
with a child with a developmental disability or risk for disability (N = 188 parents), and the other
with a child without a disability or risk (N = 186 parents).
Each cohort consisted of the following number of parents with children aged 0 to 1 (N =
111 parents), 1 to 2 (N = 137 parents), and 2 to 3 (N = 126 parents).
Procedure
All parents were administered the Chula Developmental Screening Inventory. Reliability
analyses were performed to assess the consistency of the inventory’s measurements, across different
parent-raters (interrater reliability), and across different time periods (test-retest reliability).
Validity analyses were also conducted to determine whether the test accomplished its stated
Purposes. Since the test was designed to distinguish children with developmental disabilities from
Children without disabilities, analyses examined;
(1) the test’s sensitivity – if it could correctly identify children with disabilities
(2) the test’s specificity – if it could accurately identify children without disabilities
Results
The Chula DSI demonstrated excellent reliability across different parent-raters (interrater
Reliability = .88), and across a 2 to 4 week test-retest interval (test-retest reliability = .95).
The Sensitivity (.80) and specificity (.77) results were also strong. The Chula DSI was
found to accurately identify 80% of children with developmental disabilities or a risk for disability,
and 77% of children without a disability or a risk for disability in the our testing sample.
