Felix works at Sofresh, a local greengrocer that sells
fresh fruits and vegetables. Felix duties involve
unpacking deliveries and stocking the shelves with fr
esh fruit and vegetables. He conducts daily
checks of all the produce and throws away any that have
spoiled. Felix also pulls big leaves off
broccolis, lettuces and cauliflowers and he throws th
em in the skip bin with all the other rubbish.
When the store gets busy, Felix helps out at the cash
registers to assist customers with their
purchases. He really enjoys working at the cash register
s because he likes chatting to customers. He
notices that some customers place fruit and vegetables
in separate plastic bags even things like
tomato, potato and pumpkin. When customers arrive at the
registers, their groceries are placed into
more plastic carry bags to carry safely to their cars. F
elix is puzzled by this and occasionally wonders
“Where do customers place all the plastic bags once th
ey get home”.
During a busy Saturday shift, Felix takes a quick lunch
break at the back of the store. He notices a
large pile of boxes waiting to be broken up and placed
in the skip bin. Felix thinks of a bright idea -
instead of breaking up the empty boxes, perhaps Sofres
h can offer customers a box to carry their
items to the car as opposed to using plastic carry bags
.
That afternoon, Felix decided to share his idea with h
is Manager, Stefano. Initially, Stefano was
worried that the customers might complain that the box
es are too heavy to carry however Felix
explained to Stefano that too many plastic bags are bein
g used and this is not good for the
environment. By implementing the use of boxes, the
amount of plastic bags used would decrease
and there would be fewer boxes to break up. Stefano a
greed to give the boxes a trial run.
The next day, Felix started to offers boxes to custo
mers to minimize the use of plastic bags. A lot of
customers were happy to use the boxes and thought it
was a good idea. Stefano has noticed that
the customers have adapted to the small changes and is
happy to implement Felix’s idea
permanently.
