C. sorokiniana, which has been studied mainly for its biomass production and photosynthesis research , was cultured in modified Bristol’s medium known as Proteose medium. Due to a lack of biomass accumulation observed in Proteose medium during the preliminary stages of algae cultivation, C. sorokiniana was cultivated in BBM. The biomass was shown to increase from 4.68 to 12.03 g/l after 20 days of cultivation. BBM was then used for the production of astaxanthin from C. sorokiniana. However, astaxanthin production from marine microalgae Tetraselmis sp. was optimized in F/2 medium using seawater collected from Desaru Beach
located in Johor, Malaysia.
