e.g., the
Diabetes Control and Complications Trial1 and the United
Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study.2 Self-monitoring of
blood glucose (SMBG) enables diabetes patients to effectively
control their blood glucose (BG) levels. The clinical benefits of
SMBG in type 1 diabetes patients are widely accepted.3 In type
2 diabetes patients, clinical, epidemiological, and economic
evidence supporting SMBG is accumulating steadily.4–9
Guidelines from the American Diabetes Association10 and the
International Diabetes Federation11 recommend the use of
SMBG as an integral component of diabetes therapy.
