3.5. Pollution prevention in the cement industry
The process-based pollution preventive measures in the cement
industry are shown in the following table:
As per Table 5, dust particles are emitted at the time of clinker
crushing, grinding and packing processes, resulting in air pollution.
In the clinker operation, emission of particles in different sizes can
be prevented through providing an emissions control system under
the ‘automation improvement’ option. However, this option is not ‘improving maintenance procedure’ approaches, respectively. But
these two options are also not followed by the sample cement
plants. In the packing stage, the generation of cement dust can be
prevented by adopting the ‘material handling & storage’ option,
which is followed by the sample plants. found to be followed by the sample cement plants. In the grinding
operation, the recycling of furnace gas and an adequate ventilation
system can be introduced under ‘on-site recycling and reuse’ and There is one example of an international firm with a plant in
Bangladesh that follows best practices (Huque,1994). The Bata shoe
tannery plant was not included in this study as it was not located in
Chittagong. Its existence raises questions as to why that plant is
more proactive.
