Task: Stack towels.
Prerequisites: ADT 3, SEN 12, S&L 19
Concept: This activity usually involves taking towels that have been folded or delivered and placing them in a specific location in a neat manner. The task breakdown potentially involves some counting, but in this sample lesson, the height of the stack will be used instead, precluding the need for counting. The specific skills are locating the area where towels will be initially available, picking up a specific amount, carrying them to the storage place, and putting them on an appropriate shelf.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to "please put the towels away," the student will go to the area where towels have been folded, select an amount that has been taught, take those towels to the storage location, and stack the towels in a manner perceived by the instructor to be "neat" to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Towels that have been folded and a storage area with shelves for the towels to be placed.
Task Analysis:
1. Escort the student to the area where the towels are delivered or have been folded. Continue this process until the student will go to that location from a nearby place upon verbal request.
2. While in the area described in Step 1, demonstrate the height of a stack of towels that will easily fit into the designated storage area. A marker can be drawn on the wall to indicate the height that is needed. Guide the student in creating stacks of towels that are easily carried and continue until he or she can stack the towels with only verbal requests.
3. Escort the student (without carrying the towels) to the area where the towels will be stacked and repeat the concept described in Step 1 until only verbal requests are needed.
4. Continue Step 3, with the student carrying a stack of towels, and guide the student in placing them in a neat manner on the shelves. Reduce guidance until only verbal requests are needed.
5. Combine the concepts of Steps 1 through 4 and continue until the objective is met.
