Current understandings of the parking search process are based on the
concept of parking search strategies (Axhausen 1989a,b; Axhausen and
Polak, 1990, Lorenz, 1990). The concept of a parking search strategy is a
natural generalisation of the idea of a `parking choice' that takes into
account of the inherent uncertainty associated with the availability of
specific parking spaces during periods of peak parking demand. More
formally, the term `parking search strategy' is used to denote the set of
behavioural rules adopted by a driver to find a parking space for a particular
activity on a particular day. The rules will cover such factors as the
selection of an initially desired type and/or location of parking, the route
followed towards the desired parking, opportunistic parking behaviour along
the route and the response if the initially desired parking space is not
available.
