Observation of the brush bed performance showed that fruit tended to trap against the sides of the unit, so a continuous sweeper was installed on the bed (Fig. 2). The bin dump had a circulation pattern that caused eddies, trapping fruit and only slowly releasing them. Fins were added to modify water flow. The effects of these modifications on mixing were measured during production runs of fruit using larger sets (generally 100) of the blue ‘fruit’ markers.
