Codes were developed by looking for words, phrases, and ideas relevant
to answering the research questions. I developed preliminary ideas for coding
during data collection. These initial ideas were not intended to be precise, but
rather directional. I built upon these initial ideas as I worked through the
documents. Because Atlas.TI created a unique cataloging ID for each of the
source data documents, it was easy for me to go back and revisit, refine, and align
these codes as I continued coding. A principle that guided me in this coding
activity was that it had to be clear to an outside reader how the codes were
developed from the data. Making it clear how the codes could be traced back to
the data would allow for repeatability, validity, and comparison with other
studies.
