His awareness of the metaphysical aspect of the doctrine can be clearly seen when he discussed spiritual psychology and the stages of the travel of the soul towards the Divine Presence, a journey which is portrayed as a voyage within oneself and also in the levels of being. According to him, the human soul in its journey to the Absolute and to the attainment of perfection, has got to experience seven 'stage'. The lowest stage of the soul in terms of spiritual excellence is called the soul compelling to evill (nafs al-ammārah). A person whose soul is spiritually at this stage-in terms of the cosmic dimension of his being-is stated to be in the world of the sensible ('ālam al-shahādah). In terms of qualities, it is prone to evil. At this stage, the man is to follow the injunction of the Sacred Law (shar،ah). Among the spiritual vices associated with the soul at this stage are spiritual ignorance, niggardliness, avarice, self-pride, over-talkative in matters which spiritual harm him, prone to fly into temper, gluttony, envy, and causing discord in his relations with others. At this stage of this soul, the person should adopt the formula for the remembrance of God: "Lā ilāha illā Allāh (There is no deity but Allah)". He is to presevere in his spiritual practice until his soul is elevated to the next spiritual stage by the Divine Grace.
