The couple is discouraged from seeing each other or going out together. They are also forbidden from being together in the house. These restrictions are implemented to prevent any unhealthy, potentially embarrassing situations from arising. If there is a need for the couple to meet, the groom has to seek permission of the bride's parents, as she was still under their care. Months before the engagement period is over, the groom's family sends representatives to the bride's family to discuss the wedding plans. The items discussed include the venue and time of the solemnisation(akad nikah) and the formal ceremony(persandingan), the number offamily members present during the solemnisation and the details of the ceremony itself. Spending Money for the Wedding In the old days, the groom personally gave his bride one per cent of the dowry every month. He would go to her place and regard this as an opportunity to meet his future bride. Nowadays, this is not practised, nor is it a must. Berinai(Henna Application) Ceremony A few days before the wedding, the bride will have her hands and feet decorated with motifs created with dark brown paste that is derived from the henna plant. A photography session for the bride may follow this ceremony.
