When people are overconfident, they set overly narrow confidence bands. They set their high guess too low (and their low guess too high). Hence, they get surprised more frequently than they anticipated. Later in this volume we will come across Wall Street strategists who, in the course of reviewing their predictions in the light of actual events, speak about being “humbled.” In other words, they were overconfident in their predictions.
