Amniotic fluid
Growth factors, such as EGF, IGF-1, fibroblast growth factor,
hepatocyte growth factor or transforming growth factoralpha,
in amniotic fluid, have a strong trophic effect on
immature intestinal cells and may be involved in perinatal GI
adaptation. This trophic effect of amniotic fluid might have
potential for the prevention of NEC; nonetheless, how to
purify the amniotic fluid to avoid infection is another huge
burden before it could be introduced into a clinical trial.
