Wealth and natural resources are not uniformly distributed within countries and between countries. Intensive farming to meet food demands in a country with great population pressures can excessively degrade land, while agriculture in other parts of the world produces abundantly without land degradation. A good land-conservation strategy would be to retire the severely degraded land and offset lost crop production by transfer of excess agricultural products from the surplus areas to the deficit areas.
