First Year of the Internship
The clinical engineering internship program is structured in such a way that in the first
year, clinical engineering interns dedicate their time to rigorous clinical rotations throughout the hospital and participate in various projects undertaken at their respective hospitals.
These rotations may include areas such as:
● Clinical engineering
● Respiratory therapy
● Operating room
● Physical therapy
● Anesthesiology
● Lab medicine/pathology
● Emergency room
● Diagnostic imaging
● ICU, adult and neonatal
● Nuclear medicine
● OB/GYN and labor & delivery
● Radiation oncology
Depending on individual interests, these rotations can vary from two weeks to one month.
Interns are encouraged to interact with all clinical and medical personnel, and to learn not
only the function of the equipment used in each area, but also the overall operation of each
department through which they rotate.
In the first year, interns search for their potential master’s thesis projects and subsequently start the necessary background research. Some responsibilities of the intern during the first year may include the following:
