Others have suggested that an increased proportion of laterallying
within the first 24 h after farrowing is positive, reflecting
greater udder access and suckling activity of the piglets
(Pedersen et al., 2006). Most likely, the important factor
linked to sow performance is why they are lying rather
than only whether they are lying or not. The interpretation
of increased standing and walking in terms of thermal
stress is unresolved, as we found no general negative
or positive consequences in productivity for the entire
lactation period for sows kept at 15°C.
