There is evidence that crib-biting/windsucking can
have detrimental effects on the health of horses that display
these behaviours. These include increased prevalence
of dental abnormalities [7,8], temporohyoid
osteoarthropathy [9], gastric ulceration [10], poor body
condition and weight loss [11] and colic [12,13]. Cribbiting/
windsucking behaviour has also been identified as
a risk factor for two specific forms of colic; simple colonic
obstruction and distention colic [14] and epiploic
foramen entrapment [
