Concern about alcohol-related problems on American college campuses has persisted. Alcohol
poisonings, alcohol related accidents, and alcohol-fueled assaults and riots appear in the news.
There are many more incidents that are less publicized, including property damage in dorms, and
poor school performance due to drinking or to drinking by roommates and dorm-mates.
Fortunately, research shows colleges, college communities, parents and students how to prevent
problems related to drinking by college students. This paper summarizes the state of knowledge
about the nature of the college drinking and some of the strategies that have been shown to work.
