The priorities identified policy imperatives for upgrading
the quality of undergraduate and graduate science education programs, changing the
reward system and career ladder for teachers, designing systemic and sustained
professional development at state and local levels, nurturing beginning teachers by
establishing strong apprentice-type programs, and reexamining teachers’ roles and
responsibilities and extending teachers contracts to include professional development.
Panelists addressed actions and barriers for each priority, as well as implications for
local, state, and national implementation.
