Description of the service-learning
event at the school.
Future teachers and the author met at
the elementary school prior to children arriving
to set up three tables with the three different
shapes (circle, rectangle, and hexagon)
and the posters outlining the Common
Core Standards on fractions. About 24 children
participated in the activity and were
divided among those three tables. One of the
note takers (Mindy) wrote about her interaction
with the children:
Lot of them were nervous and shy at
first. However, after meeting some of
the team leaders, the elementary students
started to become more talkative
and excited. In the beginning, the elementary
students gave their opinion
about mathematics. One elementary
student said, ‘Fractions are hard. I like
English better than Math.’
