There is widespread agreement that 12:9-14 constitutes an epilogue to the book, even if commentators differ on the number of hands involved in the composition of these verses (see comment on 12:9-14). In contrast to the style in the body of the work, Qoheleth is referred to in the third epilogue follows immediately upon 12:8, which forms an inclusion with 1:2 The inclusion may be editorial, since the superlative, “vanity of vanities,” is not used elsewhere in the book. Again Qoheleth is spoken of in the third person.
