Results and discussion
There exists in the literature a wide variety of descriptions for the preparation of a mercury film on a GC electrode [3, 4]. In our experience, the stability of the prepared film depends on the supporting electrolyte composition, electrode storage potential and on the kind of samples being
examined. It is generally more difficult to prepare an effective mercury film for anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) than for potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA).
In samples containing proteins or other organic compounds (like wine, blood, urine, waste water) an effective film covers the GC-electrode surface, but this film can be only used for PSA measurements (Fig. 1). In very pure solutions (blanks or some natural waters), the addition of a surfactant is sometimes useful to get an optimal mercury film.
