In C3 plants such as wheat and rice,
two biochemical pathways, the photosynthetic
RPP pathway and the photorespiratory
glycolate pathway, are linked
so that carbon atoms from compounds in
the RPP pathway can enter the glycolate
pathway. This happens when 02 reacts
with an enzyme linking the two pathways,
ribulose-1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/
oxygenase (Rubisco), and results
in photorespiratory CO2 loss and less
efficient CO2 assimilation. Rubisco is a
bifunctional enzyme that allows both
photosynthesis (carboxylation) and photorespiration
(oxygenation) to occur.
