Spektrum is a proposal for a future Selma Lagerlöfs Torg, a neighborhood in Hisings Backa in Göteborg. The proposal identifies existing but hidden and interrupted structures in the urban landscape, which currently are organized in bands from north to south. By focusing new development and program in correspondence with these bands, the neighborhood is unified from west to east like a spectrum. Commerce and dwellings are concentrated along the life-giving Litteraturgatan, with its future tram line. In connection to the tram stop is the new position of Selma Lagerlöf’s square, which flows in between the new developments and reaches toward the east like a delta. Car traffic is permitted to permeate the area in order to counteract isolation of the blocks caused by traffic separation. East of this new center the southern green belt is connected to its northern counterpart by way of a new park with storm water catchments and activity spaces. Next band holds the library, the new culture square, the school and a new activity center, containing sports, an ice hall and a dancing school. The new culture square, which takes the former position of Selma Lagerlöf’s square, is an imaginative and colorful gathering point with an attractive and playful landscape. The Skälltorp school gets a new entrance to the west and a school yard that is integrated with the side of the activity center. One of the two new kindergartens is situated on top of the activity center, while the other gets developed east of the school, with a play garden on the roof. Toward the E6 highway a conclusive band is located, that holds new office buildings mixed with stand-alone apartment buildings. The proximity to the the regional connection of the E6 highway makes this an attractive area for businesses and the lush environment make up a quality for residents. The whole spectrum is consolidated by a crossing connection for pedestrians and bicyclists that also connect the neighborhood to Göta älv.
